Harry Enea Jr. Announced as Campaign Chairperson

Harry Enea Jr.The Valley United Way Board of Directors hosted a wine and cheese reception at Partners Trust Bank on Thursday to announce its campaign leaders for 2005-06 as the organization is hoping for another successful fund-raising campaign.

The reception was attended by board members along with representatives of various agencies the United Way has assisted over the years, while Harry Enea Jr. was announced as campaign chairperson and Lisa Betrus as vice chairperson.

"It's a chance to meet the campaign chairpersons and a chance for the board and agency executives to meet and mingle, and gear up for the campaign prior to our official kickoff," said United Way board president Deanna Stubley.

That kickoff will take place on Sept. 15 when the campaign fund-raising goal will be announced. The Valley United Way met its campaign goal for the second straight year last year after failing to reach the mark for several years prior. Last year's goal was $201,000. Stubley said this success has taken a lot of commitment and hard work on the part of United Way leaders.

"We've spent a lot of time strengthening our organization over the past couple of years," remarked Stubley.A United Way committee is currently in the process of reviewing applications submitted by local agencies and organizations seeking assistance from the United Way, deciding which will receive funding. Last year, funds raised during the campaign were distributed to 17 local agencies that provide health and human services in Herkimer County. The United Way selects groups that affect all levels of the community, including youth, families, and the elderly, said Stubley. Last year's agencies included Herkimer County Catholic Charities, the Herkimer Area Resource Center, the Salvation Army, and the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Stubley said that once again, a number of activities and events are planned this year to help raise funds. Among these are a winery tour to be held Sept. 18, United Way Sunday on Oct. 2, a Bridal Show on Nov. 6, and a chicken barbecue on Nov. 19.

Enea said he's optimistic that the United Way can meet its goal for the third straight year led by an enthusiastic leadership group, and counting once again on strong community support.

"It's been very positive so far," said Enea. "I know the people of the Mohawk Valley will be there to continue to support us and help us support all the agencies and programs. We make a lot of money for the agencies and we have a lot of fun doing it."
